About JCI

What is JCI?

Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a global leadership development organisation for people aged 18 to 40. Its members are active in more than 5,000 communities across over 100 countries. JCI Kuala Lumpur is one of its local organisations, under JCI Malaysia.

What does JCI Kuala Lumpur actually do?

Members plan and run projects across JCI’s four Areas of Opportunity: Individual Development, Business & Entrepreneurship, Community Impact and International Cooperation. You learn by doing the work, with training and coaching along the way.

How long has JCI Kuala Lumpur existed?

Since 1954. It was initiated in 1953 and formed in 1954 as the first Junior Chamber chapter in Malaysia.

Is JCI a networking club or a charity?

Neither, exactly. Members do build networks and serve communities, but the purpose is leadership development: every project is a chance for someone to lead it.

Membership

Who can join?

Anyone aged 18 to 40 can apply to join JCI Kuala Lumpur.

How do I join?

Complete the online application and pay the membership fee. Your application is reviewed at the next Board of Directors meeting. Once endorsed, you become a provisional member. After a six-month provisional period and the required activities, the Board approves you as a full member.

How much is the membership fee?

The annual fee is set by JCI Kuala Lumpur each year. Email secretary@jcikl.cc for the current amount. Part of every fee is contributed to JCI Malaysia and JCI; the rest funds member development at JCI KL.

What do I get as a member?

Leadership experience, training, business connections, community project experience, international exposure, a peer network, and the chance to organise and lead projects of your own.

Events

Can non-members attend JCI KL events?

Many events are open to guests, sometimes with a ticket. Each event listing says who it is for and how to register. Attending as a guest is a good way to meet members before you apply.

Where do I find upcoming events?

On the Events page, which lists upcoming events first and keeps past events in an archive, and on JCI KL’s Facebook and Instagram.

Leadership

How is the Board chosen?

Members elect a new Board every year. JCI calls this “One Year to Lead”: leadership rotates, so more people get the chance to lead and every Board hands over something stronger.

Can new members lead a project?

Yes. Project roles are how members learn, and first-time chairs are coached by more experienced members.

Partnerships

How can my organisation work with JCI KL?

Through sponsorship, CSR and ESG programmes, event, venue and knowledge partnerships, youth engagement and mentoring. Start with the enquiry form on the Partners page.

Can I donate instead of joining?

Yes. Contributions of funds, services or goods are welcome; use the partnership enquiry form. If you’re 18 to 40, joining lets you shape the work directly.

International opportunities

What international opportunities are there?

JCI members can join delegations to the JCI Asia and the Pacific Conference and the annual World Congress, host visiting JCI members, work on projects with chapters abroad, and enter international award programmes.

Who pays for international conferences?

Delegates generally arrange and pay for their own registration, travel and accommodation.
